Since I had been the one to ask about the thread, it seems appropriate that I make the first comment. So I can talk about...

Official Website | Google Play Store Link | iTunes App Store Link

It's an adorable little mobile RPG where you play the titular Postknight - a mailman with combat skills, basically - as he goes through different worlds delivering your mail and helping the citizens.

It has typical RPG elements, like having to level grind (I'm stuck in a point where I have to do a bit of grinding right now) and sidequests (You have a Postknight rank that you level up by delivering mail outside of the main story that earn you tokens you cash in.) There are also six girls you can woo (in the Harvest Moon sense of wooing where you give them gifts every so often - in this game every four hours - and they have likes and dislikes, and giving them stuff they love raises their affection the most/giving them stuff they hate decreases their affection.

It has freemium parts but I've never felt forced to have to spend real money on the game to get ahead (I've done it because I love the game and want to support the developer, though).

The Black Company series by Glen Cook

If you like the Malazan books, you'll probably like these. Gritty fantasy mercenaries, fighting on the side that's technically Evil, but things like good and evil are muddy in the world. You could call it grimdark, except that there is a thread of hope, moments of humor, and not everything turns out bad for everyone involved.

The first book, The Black Company, is fairly short and is actually three novellas, each of which can stand alone so you're not committing to a whole novel if you pick it up. It reads pretty fast because the narrator, Croaker, is plain-spoken. The conceit is that he's the Company's physician and chronicler/archivist, with the job of recording everything that happens.

Also, you learn almost nothing of the characters' pasts--they join the Black Company to leave their pasts behind--so you could pick almost any character and write/draw something about their past and not worry about contradicting later canon.

The Fallen Empire series by Lindsay Buroker

If you like Buroker's Emperor's Edge series and you like space opera, then you're in luck! She has character types she likes and uses them over again. This is an 8-book (more like 8-novella) series following the misadventures of ex-military captain, current merchant ship captain, Alisa Marchenko trying to find her daughter as she ferries a misfit crew around in the aftermath of a war. Hot cyborgs, psychic creeps, and bad jokes abound.

Are you in the mood for a short anime? Say, about 12 or 13 episodes? Then I've got four recs for you!

Sunday Without God: Ai is a young gravekeeper born after the day God supposedly abandoned the world and people stopped dying and giving birth, only gravekeepers like Ai can put the walking dead to rest. However, despite living in a dying world, Ai remains hopeful, and once she sets out on a journey, she meets new friends, learns more about the world, and generally helps most of the people she meets along her journey. Available on Crunchyroll!

Day Break Illusion: A dark magical girl series based on the Major Arcana. Akari is the wielder of the sun card, and her powers awaken when her cousin Fuyuna transforms into a monstrous Daemonia and Akari accidentally kills her. Initially consumed by guilt, Akari soon accepts her fate to fight Daemonia, in hopes of one day saving those possessed by them. Available on Crunchyroll!

Magical Girl Raising Project: Another dark magical girl series, and while Day Break Illusion was a darker but still traditional magical girl series, this one is magical girl meets Battle Royale! Sixteen magical girls are thrown into competition with each other, and while some try to keep away from the violence, others gleefully dive right into battle. You've got a ninja magical girl, a nun magical girl, a cowgirl magical girl, a robot magical girl, angel magical girls, a magical girl who loses her head, and more! Available on Crunchyroll!

Izetta: The Last Witch: In an alternate version of Europe on the eve of the second World War, a young witch trades her broom for an anti-tank rifle and flies into battle to protect the archduchess she loves so much.
