What is Night On Fic Mountain?
Night On Fic Mountain is an annual fic and art exchange for small, rare, and inactive fandoms. Participants sign up to write a story of at least 1,000 words or create art in a fandom someone else has requested. In return, they receive a story of at least 1,000 words or art in a fandom they have requested.
When does this take place?
The challenge takes place during the middle of the year, at a time which may or may not be considered summer for some people. Some portion of the exchange will coincide somehow with the June solstice (June 21).
Why is this exchange called Night on Fic Mountain?
We'll give you a cookie if you tell us.
General schedule:
Nominations: Late March, through April
Signups: First half of April
Assignments go out: Mid-April
Posting deadline: 15 June
Gift reveal: 21 June
Creator reveal: 28 June
How does Night On Fic Mountain work?
Night On Fic Mountain happens in four stages: Nominations, Signups, Assignments, Reveals.
During Nominations, people use a form on the AO3 to submit the names of four rare fandoms they want to request or write/draw, with five characters/relationships for each fandom.
During Signups, people use a form on the AO3 to sign up to request and offer to write stories or make art in fandoms from the nominated list. Participants must offer and request multiple fandoms to allow for better matching. They many chose to receive story or art or either. But they are only required to write one story of at least 1,000 words or produce one piece of art (see requirements for art below). In return, they will receive one story of at least 1,000 words or one piece of art.
Things covered by the ao3 archive warnings (ie: graphic depictions of violence, major character death, rape/non-con, underage) are not to be created for anyone who has not explictly opted into them.
For the purpose of this rule, "major character death" is defined as "requested character death" and "underage" as "sexual content involving one or more participant below the age of 18". Definitions of "graphic depictions of violence" being harder to codify, this will be dealt with on a case by case basis.
All gifts must adhere to the recipients’ DNWs. If a DNW is included, the creator of that gift will be banned from future participation. Other than that, all details included in a recipient's sign-up are optional. DNWs will be checked against the ao3 sign-up.
After signups, participants are matched up based on what they offered and requested, and Assignments are sent out. Participants have at least four weeks to write a story of at least 1,000 words or produce one piece of art.
Stories and art must be posted to the Night On Fic Mountain challenge on the AO3 by the deadline, where they will automatically appear as anonymous "Mystery Gifts" for the recipients.
On 21 June, stories and art are Revealed, with creator names still hidden.
On 28 June, the creator names are Revealed, and creators can begin answering comments if they wish.
What qualifies a fandom?
Small fandoms should have no more than 500 fics on Ao3 that are completed, in English and over one thousand (1k+) words. All characters and relationships in a small fandom are eligible in that fandom for this exchange.
Fandoms can be included in the exchange even if they don't meet the above requirements. Large fandoms for media released between Yuletide sign-ups and Night On Fic Mountain nominations will still be considered (sometimes new fandoms blow up unexpectedly). These fandoms will only be eligible once.
Inactive fandoms can also qualify. Inactive fandoms may not meet the above requirements, but if they have had fewer than 24 new stories on AO3 for at least the past three years posted per year (not counting any stories posted to Yuletide collections), they will be eligible. (Exceptions to this may be made if there is a spike in posting due to someone uploading old fic, or if a fandom-specific archive is being backed up to AO3. This will be determined on a case-by-base basis.)
All gifts must adhere to the recipients’ DNWs. If a DNW is included, the creator of that gift will be banned from future participation. Other than that, all details included in a recipient's sign-up are optional. DNWs will be checked against the ao3 sign-up. DNWs that are not in good faith (ex: DNW everything but one specific scenario) will be ignored.
Fic
Assignment fic must be at least 1000 words in one of the requester's fandoms, featuring one or more of the characters or relationships they requested.
Art
Assignment art must be an original (traditional or digital) piece created entirely by the artist. It should be detailed lineart at a minimum. It should not be drawn on lined paper. Minimum size should be 500 000 pixels (for example 710 pixels x 710 pixels or 500 pixels x 1000 pixels). It should be in one of the requester's fandoms, featuring one or more of the characters or relationships they requested.
I don't want to sign up for the challenge, but still want to participate. How can I do that?
You can be a beta reader, write or draw Treats for any requests that catch your eye, or join the pinch hitter mailing list.
How does nominating work?
Nominations will open on the AO3 collection at some point in late March or early April. Participants can nominate four fandoms, and five characters or relationships from each.
Please use the following format when nominating relationships: "Relationship: Yoko Tsuno/Khany" for romantic relationships and "Relationship: Hannibal Barca & Scipio Africanus" for platonic relationships.
Can I change my mind about my nominations after I submit them?
Yes, but nominations will be approved or denied as they come in, to ensure sign-ups open on time. As long as your nomination has not yet been approved or rejected, you are free to edit it.
How will shared-universe nominations be handled?
Shared-universe nominations (Marvel 616, DCU, et cetera) will be handled individually, since the entire universe may be ineligible, while individual titles meet the criteria.
You are allowed between three (3) and ten (10) fandom requests, with up to five (5) characters/relationships in each. You will receive a gift featuring one (1) of the characters/relationships you requested. If you would like to receive a gift featuring any of the nominated characters/relationships in a fandom, click the "Any" box.
For both requests and offers, you are required to chose one (1) or two (2) of the following freeform tags: Fanart, Fanfiction. This is the medium in which you are requesting/offering to create a gift.
If you request 0 characters/relationships, your creator is allowed to write or draw about any of the nominated characters/relationships they want, or about the fandom universe in general.
Dear Creator letters
"Dear Creator" letters are letters posted to journals or other spaces that give your creator a bit more information about why you picked the sources you did, what your likes and dislikes are, more detailed prompts, and so forth.
Like the "optional details" field, letters are entirely optional. You don't have to write one, and you're free to ignore your recipient's letter while writing your story or making your art.
People who choose to write a letter can put the link in their signups, so their creators can find it easily.
You are allowed between five (5) and ten (10) fandom offers, with between two (2) and fifteen (15) characters/relationships in each. If a fandom you want to offer has less than two (2) characters/relationships (ie, one (1) or zero (0)), click the "Any" box. You would like to create a gift featuring any of the nominated characters/relationships in a fandom, click the "Any" box as well.
For both requests and offers, you are required to chose one (1) or two (2) of the following freeform tags: Fanart, Fanfiction. This is the medium in which you are requesting/offering to create a gift.
Can I change my mind about my signup after I submit it?
Yep! You can change your mind at any point during the signup period by editing your signup form. You can find your signup form on your AO3 profile page: click on "Signups" in the left-hand navigation pane.
I'm only comfortable with one or two of the fandoms/characters/relationships on the list. Can I just offer/request those?
Sorry, no. For the matching to work, it's necessary to have a wider range of offers and requests. Otherwise, there's not enough flexibility in the system to match everyone.
What are the details on my sign-up?
The details on the sign-up are any details you'd like to see in your gift fic. These details are optional to include, and are optional for your assigned creator to follow. The only thing your creator is required to follow are your fandom and characters/relationships.
What can I put in my details?
Anything you like. This is where you'd put characters/relationships who weren't nominated, any crossover information, plot ideas, kinks, et cetera. But again, remember that these details are not required. It's ultimately the creator who decides what goes in the fic.
I didn't get my assignment – what do I do?
It's possible that your spam filter ate the emailed assignment. Log in to your AO3 account and click the link for "Assignments" in the left-hand navigation pane in your Profile; your assignment should be there.
If it's not there, either, please contact the mods immediately.
Can I switch my assignment?
Assignments can't be changed under most circumstances. If the matching was in error on AO3's part (rare, but it could happen), let the mods know ASAP. Otherwise, you're free to contact the mods anyway, but the answer will probably be no.
Can I create a gift in any of my recipient's fandoms, even if I didn't sign up for them?
Sure! As long as you create a gift for one of the fandoms they requested, you're good.
Can I create more than one gift?
Sure! First you have to create a gift following the requirements in one of your recipient's fandoms, using the characters/relationships they requested. After that, you can create as many gifts as you want, for your recipient or for other people.
Am I guaranteed to be the only person creating a gift for my recipient?
No, there's no way to guarantee that. Most years at least one person has two officially assigned creators, simply to make the matching work.
Beyond that, everyone is free to create as many gifts as they want, for whoever they want, as long as they create their assigned gift first. If your recipient has a request that catches someone else's eye, they may get an extra gift or two.
Will I get more than one gift?
Probably not.
How do I post my gift?
Go to your Assignment page on AO3, which you can find under the "Assignments" link on your Profile page, or on the Night On Fic Mountain subcollection page as "Your Assignment". You should see two buttons at the bottom of your assignment: "Post to fulfil", and "Default".
Click "Post to fulfil", and you'll be taken to a posting form. This will automatically post your gift into the current year's challenge. It also has your recipient's name already filled in. All you need to do is fill in the rest of the form, preview it to make sure it looks okay, and post.
If you're posting a Treat, you won't have an assignment or "post to fulfil" button. Instead, go to the current challenge page on the AO3, and click on "Post To Collection" under the challenge title. This will take you to a form with the challenge collection name already filled in. Fill in the recipient's name manually, then fill in the rest of the form, preview it to make sure it looks okay, and post.
Can I post my gift before the deadline?
Sure! The posting form opens shortly after assignments go out. You're free to post whenever you want.
Can I edit my gift after it's posted?
Yes, the AO3 allows editing at any time.
Can I add creator's notes?
You can, but they will be visible as soon as the stories are revealed on June 21. Be careful not to put anything here that would give away your identity.
What if I can't finish my gift?
If you can't finish in time, you can default. This lets the mods know they need to find a pinch hitter to create a gift for your recipient.
To default, go to your Assignment page on AO3, which you can find under the "Assignments" link on your Profile page, or on the Night On Fic Mountain subcollection page as "Your Assignment". You should see two buttons at the bottom of your assignment: "Post to fulfil", and "Default".
Click the Default button, then click the confirmation on the popup that appears. The mods will be notified and will find a pinch hitter to fulfil your assignment.
What happens if I default?
Whether you get a penalty for defaulting depends on how and when you default.
Before 15 June: If you default using the AO3 button June 15, you'll be flagged as a defaulter, but with no penalty.
After 15 June, but before the deadline: If you default by using the Default button after 15 June, but before the deadline, future participation will be dependent upon completion of your assignment before the next exchange. Email the mods to let them know.
No-show default: If you default by simply failing to post your gift, without using the Default button or writing to the mods in advance, you will be banned from future exchanges.
What are pinch hits?
Pinch hits are assignments that the original creator has had to default on, or rarely, assignments that couldn't be matched to any creators. As people default, pinch hits will be sent out to the mailing list.
Do I need to be signed up to be a pinch hitter?
Nope! Anyone with an AO3 account can sign up to be a pinch hitter. If you want to be notified of pinch hits, see this post on LJ or this post on DW.
How do I claim a pinch hit?
Keep an eye on this comm. Pinch-hits will be posted as needed.
